VO₂max is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can take up and use per minute. It is the most reliable single measure of endurance capacity. The analysis measures it directly, during a graded test, and shows the heart rate zones in which your body burns fat, works aerobically and crosses into the red.

Sixty minutes, one test, clear zones

After a short briefing and a check of your history, the test begins: a graded effort on the ergometer with a mask that measures the gases you breathe. The load rises step by step until you decide to stop.

The measurement shows how much oxygen the body uses at each step, where the breathing changes and where the effort turns anaerobic. From these points come your personal training zones.

The evaluation is the longest part. Therapy Base explains the curve, the zones and what to do with them in the weeks ahead, in training and in recovery. CHF 370, including VAT.

What is VO₂max?

VO₂max is the maximum volume of oxygen your body can take up and use per minute, usually given in millilitres per kilogram of bodyweight per minute. It is the most reliable single measure of endurance capacity and, independent of sport, one of the strongest markers of general health and life expectancy that medicine knows. A higher VO₂max means the heart, the lungs, the blood and the muscles move and use oxygen more effectively.

How the VO₂max test works

The analysis measures VO₂max directly during a graded test on an ergometer with a breathing mask. The load rises step by step and the gases you breathe out are measured continuously; you decide when to stop. The test itself lasts about fifteen to twenty minutes inside the sixty-minute appointment with Therapy Base. The measurement shows how much oxygen the body uses at each step, where the breathing changes and where the effort turns anaerobic. From these points come your personal heart rate zones for fat burning, aerobic work and threshold.

What you take home

Your VO₂max value and how it compares, personal training zones, an explanation of the curve in person and concrete recommendations for the next training block. The analysis costs CHF 370, including VAT, and is paid online when you book.

Who the VO₂max analysis is for

For runners, cyclists, triathletes and swimmers who train by heart rate and want exact zones instead of formulas, for anyone preparing for a race or a long-distance goal, for people who train a lot and improve little, and for those who want to know their endurance capacity as a health marker.

How to prepare

Sports clothes and shoes. No hard training the day before, no heavy meal in the three hours before and no caffeine shortly before the test. Therapy Base confirms the details when you book. Appointments run Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:00 at Anida Lab; cancel or move in your account up to 24 hours before.
